Foundation plays a vital role in city's development | Opinion - The Providence Journal

Providence, like many cities, has faced challenges through its history. Years ago, rail lines ran through the downtown and the rivers were covered by concrete. The old train station stood without purpose. The I-195 ramp divided the city, blocking access to 20 acres of land. Westminster Street with its historic but abandoned buildings was empty after 5 p.m. Foundation pilings deteriorated in the south side of the Woonasquatucket, while pedestrians walked a half mile around to access the other side of the river.

These challenges seemed insurmountable to some, and others may not have seen these as challenges at all. Leaders in Providence did, though. The Providence Foundation members gathered with government officials, private-sector business leaders, nonprofit directors, and community members. Their combined vision and energy flipped the switch.
