Dredging to begin this fall & complete by February 2020

This fall the RI Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) will begin dredging the Providence River. This project will remove approximately 22,000 cubic yards of road silt and sand that have accumulated over the years in the bottom of the river.

Here’s what you need to know about the project:

  1. Dredging will begin before the end of the year and go from bank to bank starting from the Amtrak bridge under Providence Place Mall and continue to the Crawford Street Bridge piers.

  2. Material removed from the river will be beneficially reused at development sites in the city and other towns in the state.

  3. Dredging machines will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week until completion. The project is scheduled to be completed in February 2020.

  4. In preparation for the project the WaterFire braziers will be removed and the City of Providence will close Peck Street to through trucking.

  5. Funding for this project comes from the Green Economy & Clean Water Bond, which passed last November, of which Rhode Island secured $7 million.
