Long Awaited Pedestrian Bridge Opens — The Providence Foundation

On a beautiful Friday afternoon in August, the ribbon was cut on the long awaited pedestrian bridge spanning the Providence River. This project was the culmination of years of work from city and state officials, and the ceremony was attended by many of the city, state and federal officials, as well as citizens, who helped make this project a reality.

The Providence Foundation, first under the leadership of Dan Baudouin and then our current Executive Director Cliff Wood, has been a part of this project since its inception. Mayor Jorge Elorza thanked the Foundation in his remarks, “About 30 years ago, the City of Providence, along with The Providence Foundation, envisioned a new downtown. They saw that this was a once in a generation opportunity, as a highway was to be relocated and this linear mile of developable land was about to come online. “ He went on to say, “Under the very able and visionary leadership … the Foundation were critical partners in advancing the vision and planning for this space.”

This bridge directly links the Jewelry District and Fox Point and is a key connector to the parks and public spaces along the riverwalk and throughout downtown. The Providence Foundation is proud of the work done to see this project through different administrations, assuring a continuity to this project. This new bridge is a beautiful new attraction and gathering space in our city.
